Saudade… the Portuguese word with no translation possible, carved in our unique culture for centuries. Since the Age of Discoveries, Portuguese and many other people spent years away from their home a nd their loved ones so they could find what was out there…

First, let’s settle that you are also on a discovery journey. Since the first moment you became an Erasmus student, you’re absorbing new cultures, new languages, new places, new people…New is scary and new is fun!

However, that’s not the reason why you’re here, you already know that…you’re reading this because the adrenaline rush is over. You’re starting to feel homesick and that’s fine.
Here are five tips to get you through this:

Saudade…

Remind yourself where you are and why. Think positive.

Sometimes sadness just takes over our mind but don’t let that control you. You’re in a different place so don’t waste your finite time there. Go out, explore the city, meet new people, make new friends, go get a cup of coffee and enjoy the landscape…stop…take a deep breath in…deep breath out…and look! Fresh air can do a lot for you. Seize the moment and enjoy the place you’re at right now.

Lembra-te onde estás e porquê. Pensa positivo.

Facetime your loved ones once in a while. Make the new place feel like home.

Despite you’re missing home don’t call your family every day, just check on them to ease your mind. If you really need to keep in touch, you can send them some souvenirs or postcards.

Regarding your new home, you can always redecorate it with something you brought with you or with some family portraits! Make it yours!

Torna-a tua!

Establish a new routine.

A routine structures your days helping your mind to stay calm and organized during this time. Do not forget to workout! The advantages of exercising are truly amazing, it’s indeed a great way to keep you relaxed and moving!

Create a Checklist. Be engaged.

It is important to be engaged during activities, not just busy. Focus and enjoy what you’re doing. Take the time to learn new skills even if it’s a simple local recipe. List the exhibitions, monuments or famous coffee shops you want to visit and have fun! Also, what you’re missing is something familiar so why not choose someplace to visit frequently until it becomes familiar to you?

Cria uma checklist. Dedica-te.

Life is meant to be shared. Create memories. Document your journey.

You’ll start to take pictures of the things you do, the places you visit, the people you meet and that’s a great way to share your experience with the folks back home. It’s not recommended that you spend much time on social media but it’s nice to post a thing or two!

Last but not least, talk to someone about your feelings and ask for help if you need to. For some people, homesickness may resemble the loss of a loved one. This can be harsh because your mind needs stability and consistency so remember, what you’re going through right now will disappear and you’ll be okay.

Besides, you’ll get these six months stuck in your head for a lifetime! Once you are home, everything is going to be different but the same…You’ll light up a room with the knowledge you obtained and the insights you’ll share!

Embrace this opportunity and every feeling during this experience!

A vida é para ser partilhada. Cria memórias. Documenta a tua aventura.
